Right of Way for Bikes Near Bibury

There is an application in hand at Glos County Council to reclassify a public right of way just to the south west of Bibury.

It runs from Arlington Pike, the five way road junction at SP103650, Lat 51*45’25.08”N, Long. 1*50’58.95”E road to

Coneygar at SP125048, Lat 51*44’30.88”N, Long 1*49’10.10”W.

The OS shows it as a RUPP (road used as public path) but  RUPPs  have been recently been reclassified as Restricted By-ways by GCC, by default in line with Government directive. These are like bridleways but also allow non-motorised carriages and carts. The South East end of the right of way is shown as a footpath, This anomaly almost certainly results from adjacent parish councils not being consistent when they had the job of classification many years ago.

The present enquiry will be determining between an unrestricted by-way (i.e. by-way open to all traffic  -   BOAT)  or  restricted by-way for the whole length.

The decision will depend partly on whether is evidence of use for cycling in the period 2001 – 2006. I would also be interested to know of cycling use  2007 – 2010  and pre 2001, (but the legal significance is not the same as  for 2001 – 2006). I need to respond to Shire Hall by 20th August so I would appreciate information by 18th August.

Corinium at Cotswold League Race Series

Tuesday 13th saw the final round of the Cotswold League Road Race series run off on the Poulton/Down Ampney circuit and well organised by LVIS with BC support. Steve Yates drove the first group on the road round to hold off the chasing groups and was still able to take 5th on the night.
After calculation of the final standings Corinium took second place team behind VC Montpellier. VC montpellier's Ian McInnes took the top rider prize for the series with Steve Yates and Pete Hutchinson taking second and third place for Corinium.

Corinium win Interclub 10mile TT Trophy

The annual interclub competition between Corinium and Swindon was a very close run event as both clubs leaned on their fast members to be available for the event. Blustery but dry conditions on the evening made riders try hard to get a good time. 46 riders finished with the top20 rides from Swindon and Corinium counting towards the total. Much calculation ensued in the clubhouse afterwards from Mike Appleby, Liz McKenzie and Allan Norwood with Corinium just edging it with 414points to Swindons 409 - a very close event. Thanks to Swindon for organising the BBQ after the event.

David Phillips wins Silver medal at Vets National Criterium Championships

The LVRC National Criterium Championships were held on the cycle circuit at Fowlmead, Kent on Sunday 30th June. After rain the night before the day started bright and breezy and the course soon dried out and provided an excellent racing surface.
David was competing in the over 50 category and lined up with about 30 other riders. The strong wind made it hard for anyone to break away despite many attempts, all of which were pulled back. At 5 laps to go three riders had a dangerous lead on the bunch, so David attacked and bridged the gap, followed by three other riders. This leading group of 7 riders soon whittled down to 5 for the final uphill sprint. Nick Yarworth( VC Raphael) made a huge attack out of the last bend to win the event, followed closely by David Phillips in second place for Corinium.

David Phillips wins at Upavon

David Phillips, Nick Walmsley and George Taylor lined up with about 40 riders for the 3rd/4th category 45 mile support race to the Southern Regional Championships. The junior championship race was mixed up in their race too, so there were lots of younger, leaner riders mixing it up the whole race!  There were many attacks but it was only on the last lap that a break of 4 riders got a significant lead. On the last long climb up to the airfield a chasing group of about 10 riders broke free from the bunch, and David Phillips was active in this group, chasing down the breakaway, one by one they were caught right up to the finish line where David was the first 3rd/4th cat rider over the line, picking up another 10 BCF points. Nick and George finished comfortably in the bunch in 19th and 16th position. We wish David all the best for the Vets Nationals on 30th May.

Corinium at the West DC 10mile TT Team Championships

15th May saw 8 Corinium riders entered for the West DC 10mile team Championships held on the somewhat sporting U40 course. (The U40 course starts from the top of Lyneham Banks and heads out to Wooton Bassett and turns left after the railway bridge and turns back via Grittenham to finish near Dauntsey Lock at the bottom of Lyneham Banks.) Team prizes were for the combined lowest times of best three club riders. A fine and sunny day was only marred by a nagging return headwind. Fastest on the day was Rob Pears of Bath CC but with the rest of his team this was only sufficient for the 3rd place team with Corinium CC taking the second team prize and Chippenham taking first place. Fraser MacDonald of Corinium also winning the the best junior prize with 23:46 continuing his run of good form.

Corinium at Hillingdon 19th May

Dave Hobbs and David Phillips lined up with another 50 riders for the bi weekly LVRC criterium races at the Hillingdon Cycle circuit on Wednesday 19th May.  There were many attempts to get away from the fast moving pack, with Hillngdon RC and Finchley RC working well as teams, constantly launching attacks and covering the bunch. Towards the end of the race a bunch of 5 strong riders finally managed to break free, but were caught on the final climb to the sprint finish, which was won by Scott Holmes followed closely by David Phillips in second place, and first in his age catergory. Dave Hobbs finished comfortably in the bunch which was impressive for his second road race ever!  For those that are interested Hillingdon is only 1hr down the M4 from Swindon and these events are every other week. See the LVRC website for more details.

David Phillips Wins at Hillingdon

On Wednesday 5th May approx 50 LVRC riders signed on for the fortnightly Team Quest crits on the Hillingdon cycle circuit. After about half an hour David was in a break of 8 riders who had a decent lead on the bunch. Irritatingly a few riders were not working effectively and after half an hour of hard graft the bunch caught the break and it was swept up. Just as David muttered ‘what a waste of time that was’, a Finchley RC rider caterpulted off the front and David caught his wheel. With 5 laps to go the two worked well together and very quickly had a significant gap on the bunch. David was in pole position out of the last corner and followed his opponent up the hill and outsprinted him to win the race by a clear margin. That is David’s third win of the year!

Fraser MacDonald Takes Jnr Prize at Corinium Open 10

Saturday 8th May saw Corinium CC's first Open of the year well organised again by Mike Cashman. Despite damp and windy conditions which saw many DNS the 10mile Open was won by Rob Pears of Bath CC in a great time of 20.30. Corinium's on form Fraser MacDonald took the junior prize with a 23.38. Gerry Peppin being the only other rider to finish with 27.38.

Corinium at Thames Velo RR

Despite a nice week the weather turned wet for the start of the 2010 Thames Velo CAT3/4 RR starting near Great Milton in Oxon with a full field of 80riders. George Taylor, Nick Walmsley and Pete Hutchinson travelled together via the obligatory coffee stop en route and met David Phillips there for the warm-up. The course was undulating at best with only one draggy climb and the long, windy straights made attempts at breaks somewhat half-hearted. George and Nick comfortably stayed at the business end with Nick leading the peloton up the climbs at pace serving up some punishment for the rest of the riders. Pete clipped off the front for the Prime with 7miles to go and with only one rider bridging over for support they were realed in 500m from the intermediate sprint point with Nick showing a great burst of speed out of the bunch to pick up the second place Prime Prize. Some more half attempts at breaks failed before the almost inevitable bunch sprint for the finish. With an unorganised 80 riders jostling for position David Phillips went early but was over-run by the boiling mass of riders and the win was taken by Rob Yeatman of Team Zappis with Pete getting 8th after a lucky lead-out by finding Nick who finished in 12th with George and David finishing safely in the front quarter of the field.

22nd April Club TT results

22nd April saw Corinium hosting round 3 of the Thursday evening Club Time Trial series. Owing to portable traffic lights being used on the Latton straight the usual U48 course could not be used. As in previous years, the alternative 7.8mile (?) course was used which starts in the same place as the U48 but takes in a couple of laps of the Butts Farmhouse straight before returning close to the starting point. Plenty of marshals and a good turn-out of 44 riders for this slightly more sporting course made for a good nights racing. Team Raleigh's James Stewart went fastest on the night with a blistering ride.

Corinium at the Peter Rigby Memorial RR

A very chilly start to Sunday 18th April saw a full field for the Peter Rigby Memorial 50 mile RR near Fareham. The weather sooned warmed into one of the finest days of the year so far as the riders set off on the 2 mile neutralised zone from the HQ. The full race report and results area available at; http://new.britishcycling.org.uk/road/article/roa20100418-Report--Peter-Rigby-Memorial-Road-Race-0
but this does not fill in all the blanks for what turned out to be an event strewn race. Steve Yates shipped his chain on the first incline as the race accelerated in earnest on the first climb and once fixed had to put in a huge effort to regain the peloton (he raced the rest of the race in his familiar big chainring only!). After 3 laps an oncoming elderly lady pressed on with her car and forced the peloton in half as several riders went down (luckily with no injuries) and Pete Hutchinson found himself the wrong side of the gap with Steve and Mike Edwards comfortably out of trouble towards the front which meant an energetic chase to rejoin. There were numerous horse incidents some of which are mentioned in the BC report. The course was 9 laps of a 5.5mile course which took in 115m of climbing each lap which eventually began to take it's toll as riders were shelled on each ascent of the main circuit climb as the attacks kept coming. With two laps to go the peloton was down to 28riders with Corinium the only team with 3riders left but did not have the legs left to make their numbers count. All three riders finished in the main bunch across the line and the race was won by Jerry Raynor of Somer Valley with a big attack on the final climb to the finish line. The nature of the attack left many riders more than dissatisfied with the move including a switch to the wrong side of the road from the rear of the main group and then forcing his way accross the front with oncoming vehicles causing much braking and dissarray. Possibly the sort of riding BC should be trying to discourage on open roads. Mike Edwards was most impressive on his first road race outing of the year with little volume, comfortably floating to the front of the race from the start and finishing in the bunch all the with the main goal of the day in capturing some powertap data.

8th April Club 10mile TT Results

The results of the club 10mile TT held on 8th April 2010 are now available. Judging from the times already this year Swindon are out in force and going to prove quite a challenge to turn them over again at the Interclub event on 1st July. I suggest we should cheat to retain the trophy by starting training. With all our best opening batsmen still in the pavilion and our improving middle order yet to show their hand we are still keeping some tinder dry. (I think there may still be time to tape over the vents on your TT helmet too.................)
Do please note that all the results for the year are on the Time Trials page and that the summary competitions points documents will be available from that page too when compiled.

Pete Hutchinson Wins at Thruxton

Sunday 29th March saw a dry but windy for the start of the Cat3 Omega Circuit Race at Thruxton at 11:30 for about 60 riders for 12 laps of the 2.3mile circuit. A break of 3 went in the first 500m and Pete and 4 others were able to bridge across by the end of the first lap. The group of 8 worked well and slowly built a good lead on the peloton. With 5 laps to go and with about 1min 20secs in hand several attempts were made to reduce the selection with one solo attack going clear with 3 laps to go. The remaining 7 took a little while to organise a chase but duely bought him back entering the final lap. With several attacks not yielding significant gaps, Pete made his move about 150m before the chicanes (350m to go) and went through the bends with a good 20m lead and just hung on to take the win by a couple of bike lengths and realised his four year ambition of taking a road race win.
Building on David Phillips ealier exploits, Corinium have now extended thier lead at the top of the BC South Regional League with 43 points passing the teams season target of 40 and it's still only March.

2-Up 10mile TT results

Saturday 27th March saw Corinium CC hold their annual 2-up 10mile time trial on the club's U48 course. A small breeze to trouble the riders on the homeward stretch was a small price to pay for a thankfully dry and relatively warm mornings racing for the 44 starters. Results of the event.

David Phillips Wins LVRC Tysoe Road Race

About 40 over 50 year old veteran riders lined up on Sunday morning for the annual LVRC 45mile Tysoe RR. There was an early break away of one rider who nobody wanted to chase down so in the end David Phillips escaped from the bunch and caught him, only to find him too tired to really work. David went straight past him and won the hill prime but saw behind a bunch of 8 riders closing in. He let them catch him and the the group worked together to stay away from the main bunch. They lost a couple of riders on the next lap, leaving 7 riders to fight out the long uphill sprint finish. David jumped away from the group with 300 yds to go and left all but one rider standing, who he outsprinted to win the race by several bike lengths.  David will hold the Mike Green Memorial trophy for the next year, given by the organisers, Stratford Cycling club.

Corinium at the Spring Chicken RR

Saturday 13th saw a full field of 80 riders start the Spring Chicken RR in clear warm weather with Corinium's Steve Yates, George Taylor and Pete Hutchinson on the starting line. A break of 3 went  the instant the peloton left the neutralised zone and was only caught 6 miles from the finish. The inevitable bunch sprint was far too twitchy and disorderly for our team who all put discretion before valour in the final 200m and rolled in safely in the bunch
(45miles at 25.1mph average)

David Phillips gets Podium after Upavon Series Final

David Phillips was level on points for first place going into the final round of the Upavon winter series on Saturday 13th March. Given that his main rival had sprinted better to finishes over the series trying to get David into a break was the main target for the day. Despite many brave efforts by the team (especiall Gavin Lancaster and Callum Lister)  to drag David off the front the race finished in a bunch sprint. David had his rival firmly glued to his wheel all race and was duely outsprinted as he predicted.David did manage an impressive 6th pace which secured him 2nd in the series which is a fantastic result. The winner of the series was Matthew Conner of Newbury RC (31 years younger than David.
(Race team; David Phillips, Gavin Lancaster, Callum Lister, Andrew Wilcox, Mike Ibbotson and Mike Cashman).

Cheltenham Flyer: terrain similar to White Horses; very popular event.

Heart of England 300: Come & help Peter Holden either by riding or helping.  An undulating ride through the rural Heart of England offering a chance to see the Cyclists’ war memorial. Few big hills after the Cotswolds, mainly on quiet roads. Café controls. The Harlequin Hack starts from Northmoor, West of Oxford.  It offers a modest excursion into the Cotswold hills followed by a gentle wander through the watery lanes of the upper Thames, the Evenlode and the Windrush.

The downside of The Elenith is the lung busting & thigh bending but the upside is the lovely Welsh scenery complete with lots of mummy sheep & baby lambs accessed via the quiet mountain roads.  Starts & finishes in Kidderminster.

Corinium at Upavon (8 of 10)

Team Riders: David Phillips, Mike Cashman, Mike Firth, George Taylor, Pete Hutchinson.
It was very cold and windy as the riders warmed up for the 8th race of 10 in the UpavonCat 3/4 winter series with Corinium’s David Phillips leading the series with numerous races in the series cancelled owing to the poor winter weather. With 49 riders lining up for the start the rain started in earnest just for good measure and meant for a less than aggressive first few laps with an early crash making the bunch nervous. All the attacks from the main protagonists in the series were covered with a break of two eventually going away after 40minutes. With a team-mate in the break the front of the peloton was well marshalled by the remaining pair from the Inverse Racing Team. With a couple of laps to go with the break certain to stay away, the peloton settled for the bunch sprint for 3rd place and the lower speed bunched the riders up. On the final lap, George hit the front and kept the group safely strung out with David nicely placed towards the head of the group which was fortunate as there was a second crash towards the rear. David sprinted in safely for 9th place overall but lacking his usual finishing zip to pick up another point and keep the series lead with two races to go.

Windrush Audax Report

81 intrepid riders lined up at Ashton Keynes Bradstone Pavilion at 9 am on Sunday 31st January for the latest renewal of the Windrush Winter Warm Up. Conditions were, shall we say, on the cold side, and there were some incidents on the freezing roads early on, but all made it to the first stop at Stanton Harcourt village hall. They were refuelled with light refreshments before the next stage to the Fox Inn at Great Barrington. Paul Porter and his team again produced top quality pasta dishes. His welcome proved so inviting that Norman Hayes recorded some riders lingering for more than an hour! These may have included the two cyclists from Scotland who had come down to ride the route with a friend on his birthday. 80 riders finished the course back at Ashton Keynes, with the first two making it back at 1.20 pm, just a minute outside the fastest permitted time. A group of five followed after a few minutes, including our expiring chairman who had been chasing them down. A steady flow of riders then came in until just before 4.30, all greeted by a terrific menu of hot and cold food provided by the indefatigable Bud Dutton. 20 Coriniums took part and the only slight downer for me was that only about half the 80 riders could be bothered to note down the two controls. This was even though they were deliberately made easy and did not even require you to stop on the bike. I don't know what to do about this problem. Any ideas gratefully received!

As well as Bud and Norman, many thanks to Barbara and Peter Holden and Bryony Leatherbarrow for helping at the start and to David and Ann Hibberd and Robert and Hazel Wyatt for manning Stanton Harcourt.

David Phillips Wins for Corinium at Upavon

David Phillips and Nick Walmsley signed on with 40 riders on Saturday 6th Feb on a cold damp morning for the second 3rd/4th category race in the Upavon series. The bunch started at an electric pace almost catching the E/1/2 race ahead. During the chaos Lewis King and Ralph Carter (London Dynamo)managed to break away and managed to gain over 30 seconds on the bunch. Lewis got dropped by Ralph and with still 30 minutes of racing to go David Phillips made his move and accelerated away from the bunch chased by one other rider, Jim Marshall (Inverse racing). The two riders worked together to catch Ralph, and then the three riders took turns, working well together , keeping the pace up and opening a comfortable gap on the bunch. In the final uphill Ralph sprinted to the finish, but misjudged the finish line and was overtaken by David Phillips who celebrated his first win in 30 years. Chapeau David!

David Phillips 2nd at Upavon RR

David lined up with 36 other 3rd and 4th category riders on Saturday 23rd Jan, on a cold and bleak winter morning. It was the first of the Upavon Winter Series, as the last two weeks had been cancelled owing to bad weather. The race started quickly and riders were being blown out the back straight away. There were many attacks, all of which got pulled back.On the final ascent to the finish line Matthew Conner from Newbury RC made an attack and broke free from the bunch chased quickly by David and Andy Edwards from Kingston Wheelers. Matthew won the sprint followed closely by David Phillips who came in 2nd place. A great start to Corinium's racing season.

The Jack & Grace cotton Memorial ride starts & finishes at Almondsbury, on the way down to Bristol offering a flattish ride along the Severn Vale. Please note the Windrush starts this year again from the Bradstone Pavilion at Ashton Keynes.  Peter Stevens continues as organiser so if you are not riding, he will appreciate your help. I recommend the Flapjack.  Starting and finishing in Chippenham, you’ll find the route interesting, covering some familiar ground but easier than the Warm-up.  There will also be loads of food at four controls with plenty of flapjack courtesy the ladies of the Chippenham CC.  A few members have ridden it in the past, including yours truly, and thoroughly enjoyed it. For the Cotswold Corker, be quick to enter as the event gets oversubscribed.  Carrying two altitude points this year, it provides 1,900 mtrs of climbing – just the job for conditioning those racing legs for the start of the season.
