For those of you who want to share my pain, you have the opportunity to follow me round the 1,200km of the Paris - Brest - Paris cycle ride (well track me on the web). Of course, if I fail to complete the ride this will give you all the ammunition you need to poke fun at me for years to come!
Not only has my preparation not gone quite to plan (I can bore for hours on the trials and tribulations I went through) but I managed to twist my ankle while out walking last week and have only just taken delivery of the bike I plan to ride (using an untested and unfamiliar bike is absolutely the wrong thing to do for a ride like this). Anyway, other than tracking through the PBP web site, radio silence now descends ...
I am rider GB 5386 - you can track me on this web link using frame number 5566

LVRC National Handicap Road Race 2011-05-22
About 65 over 40 year old riders signed on at Welland near Malvern for The National Handicap 50 mile Road race on a very bright and windy Saturday. Each 5 yr age group set off 2 minutes apart, with the exception of the A's (40-44) and B's(45-49) who were 90 seconds and then 30 secs behind. David was in the C group (50-54) with about 17 riders.
Ian Fagan, an ex professional cyclist quickly got a chaingang organised and set a blistering pace for the first 50 minutes. The group worked well together but there was no room for passengers, so gradually riders were shelled out of the back and we were left with about 7 or 8 riders in that group who kept mopping up back markers from other groups. After 50 minutes we caught the D group and some of the others. There were about 6 riders away with a small lead but these got swept up in the last 40 minutes of the race. Despite many attempts to break away, the wind made it difficult and it was clear that the race was going to end in a bunch sprint between the remaining 30 or 40 riders. David knew that there were a few good sprinters in the field and in the last couple of miles they were positioning themselves towards the front. There was a lot of josseling for position. At the 500 m flag the bunch slowed momentarily whilst the sprinters all waited for someone to make the move. David went through a gap on the inside with about 200m to the line and jumped away at speed. No one caught his wheel and he gave it everything he had to cross the line in first place. The bunch was approaching quickly with Chris Davis (Bush Healthcare) taking second place, but David still won by a few bike lengths. He was presented with a National Championship jersey, winner's trophy and Gold medal. The average speed for the race was 25mph!

As predicted at the Club Dinner the long standing Club Team 10 record was finally broken on Saturday 14th May at the Chippenham Open 10 on the U47. The club record was 1hr 5mins and 7secs set by Allan Norwood, John Howells and Laurie Hunt back in 1991 without a single piece of carbon fibre to their name. Yet to be ratified by Allan but the new time of 1hr 4mins 42secs was set by Andy Morgan, Steve Yates and Pete Hutchinson with 22:04, 21:24 and 21:14 respectively. The conditions were less than ideal with a strong wind to overcome on the return leg but Paul Burnip smashed his PB with a great 23:30 with Graham Hughes and Gerry Peppin putting a second team of 3 together. The Chippenham event was the West DC 10 team championship too so when the results are confirmed we will be able to see where our two teams finished below the top 3 teams of Giant, Chippenham and Bath.
