Cheltenham Flyer: terrain similar to White Horses; very popular event.

Heart of England 300: Come & help Peter Holden either by riding or helping.  An undulating ride through the rural Heart of England offering a chance to see the Cyclists’ war memorial. Few big hills after the Cotswolds, mainly on quiet roads. Café controls. The Harlequin Hack starts from Northmoor, West of Oxford.  It offers a modest excursion into the Cotswold hills followed by a gentle wander through the watery lanes of the upper Thames, the Evenlode and the Windrush.

The downside of The Elenith is the lung busting & thigh bending but the upside is the lovely Welsh scenery complete with lots of mummy sheep & baby lambs accessed via the quiet mountain roads.  Starts & finishes in Kidderminster.

Corinium at Upavon (8 of 10)
27th February 2010

Team Riders: David Phillips, Mike Cashman, Mike Firth, George Taylor, Pete Hutchinson.
It was very cold and windy as the riders warmed up for the 8th race of 10 in the UpavonCat 3/4 winter series with Corinium’s David Phillips leading the series with numerous races in the series cancelled owing to the poor winter weather. With 49 riders lining up for the start the rain started in earnest just for good measure and meant for a less than aggressive first few laps with an early crash making the bunch nervous. All the attacks from the main protagonists in the series were covered with a break of two eventually going away after 40minutes. With a team-mate in the break the front of the peloton was well marshalled by the remaining pair from the Inverse Racing Team. With a couple of laps to go with the break certain to stay away, the peloton settled for the bunch sprint for 3rd place and the lower speed bunched the riders up. On the final lap, George hit the front and kept the group safely strung out with David nicely placed towards the head of the group which was fortunate as there was a second crash towards the rear. David sprinted in safely for 9th place overall but lacking his usual finishing zip to pick up another point and keep the series lead with two races to go.

Windrush Audax Report
9th February 2010

81 intrepid riders lined up at Ashton Keynes Bradstone Pavilion at 9 am on Sunday 31st January for the latest renewal of the Windrush Winter Warm Up. Conditions were, shall we say, on the cold side, and there were some incidents on the freezing roads early on, but all made it to the first stop at Stanton Harcourt village hall. They were refuelled with light refreshments before the next stage to the Fox Inn at Great Barrington. Paul Porter and his team again produced top quality pasta dishes. His welcome proved so inviting that Norman Hayes recorded some riders lingering for more than an hour! These may have included the two cyclists from Scotland who had come down to ride the route with a friend on his birthday. 80 riders finished the course back at Ashton Keynes, with the first two making it back at 1.20 pm, just a minute outside the fastest permitted time. A group of five followed after a few minutes, including our expiring chairman who had been chasing them down. A steady flow of riders then came in until just before 4.30, all greeted by a terrific menu of hot and cold food provided by the indefatigable Bud Dutton. 20 Coriniums took part and the only slight downer for me was that only about half the 80 riders could be bothered to note down the two controls. This was even though they were deliberately made easy and did not even require you to stop on the bike. I don't know what to do about this problem. Any ideas gratefully received!

As well as Bud and Norman, many thanks to Barbara and Peter Holden and Bryony Leatherbarrow for helping at the start and to David and Ann Hibberd and Robert and Hazel Wyatt for manning Stanton Harcourt.

David Phillips Wins for Corinium at Upavon
8th February 2010

David Phillips and Nick Walmsley signed on with 40 riders on Saturday 6th Feb on a cold damp morning for the second 3rd/4th category race in the Upavon series. The bunch started at an electric pace almost catching the E/1/2 race ahead. During the chaos Lewis King and Ralph Carter (London Dynamo)managed to break away and managed to gain over 30 seconds on the bunch. Lewis got dropped by Ralph and with still 30 minutes of racing to go David Phillips made his move and accelerated away from the bunch chased by one other rider, Jim Marshall (Inverse racing). The two riders worked together to catch Ralph, and then the three riders took turns, working well together , keeping the pace up and opening a comfortable gap on the bunch. In the final uphill Ralph sprinted to the finish, but misjudged the finish line and was overtaken by David Phillips who celebrated his first win in 30 years. Chapeau David!

David Phillips 2nd at Upavon RR
1st February 2010

David lined up with 36 other 3rd and 4th category riders on Saturday 23rd Jan, on a cold and bleak winter morning. It was the first of the Upavon Winter Series, as the last two weeks had been cancelled owing to bad weather. The race started quickly and riders were being blown out the back straight away. There were many attacks, all of which got pulled back.On the final ascent to the finish line Matthew Conner from Newbury RC made an attack and broke free from the bunch chased quickly by David and Andy Edwards from Kingston Wheelers. Matthew won the sprint followed closely by David Phillips who came in 2nd place. A great start to Corinium's racing season.

The Jack & Grace cotton Memorial ride starts & finishes at Almondsbury, on the way down to Bristol offering a flattish ride along the Severn Vale. Please note the Windrush starts this year again from the Bradstone Pavilion at Ashton Keynes.  Peter Stevens continues as organiser so if you are not riding, he will appreciate your help. I recommend the Flapjack.  Starting and finishing in Chippenham, you’ll find the route interesting, covering some familiar ground but easier than the Warm-up.  There will also be loads of food at four controls with plenty of flapjack courtesy the ladies of the Chippenham CC.  A few members have ridden it in the past, including yours truly, and thoroughly enjoyed it. For the Cotswold Corker, be quick to enter as the event gets oversubscribed.  Carrying two altitude points this year, it provides 1,900 mtrs of climbing – just the job for conditioning those racing legs for the start of the season.

Happy New Year,        Terry Cleary

New Years Day Fun 10 TT

Alan Tebbutt Dies at 79
31st December 2009

The best way of describing Alan Tebbutt was that he was Bristol's equivalent of a "Ron Diplock"  He didn't race but organised many events, especially the annual WTTA 100 miles TT that came into Ciren each year.  Annually, after Ron died he would ring me (Allan Norwood) and I believe Mike Appleby to try and get Corinium to supply marshals in this area and frequently Mike and I and others helped.  His wife Janet Tebbutt is a past holder of of the Women's UK "End to End" record and very well known in Bristol and beyond.  The funeral was well attended by Bristol Club's and Westvets + friends and relatives.

Corinium at Cheltenham Cyclocross
24th November 2009

A larger than average field signed on for Round 9 of the Western Cyclocross league organised by Cheltenham and County CC, held at Pitville Park Cheltenham on Sunday. A rather large contigent from Coventry were evident including former World Veteran Champion, Mick Ives and former elite rider, and the winner of the race, Darren Atkins. Darren's father was John Atkins who was 12 times National cyclocross champion in the 1960's and 70's.

The ground was wet from a few days of rain but the weather held for most of the race. David Phillips got a good start and maintained his position throughout the race, despite having to clear mud from his bike a couple of times, and one small tumble. He finished in 10th place overall, 6th veteran. Gordon Smillie also rode and came in 39th place.

Corinium at Newbury Cyclocross
16th November 2009

Another good team turn out on damp and sketchy conditions for the Didcot Phoenix round 2 of the Wessex Cyclocross league. The event was run at the Newbury Showground on Sunday 11th October.

Pictured above (from left) are Graham Hughes, Paul Burnip, David Phillips (best placed Corinium rider and fresh from his vets win at Bristol the previous week) and Nick Walmsley (fresh(?) from his 3 Peaks outing)
